This is a really good time to look at the family budget as a whole. It is something which can remain neglected for years. You’ll know the income and a rough idea of the amounts being spent, but many parents don’t enjoy discussing finances, so as long as everything appears OK on the surface it is completely ignored.
By spending a couple of hours and looking at the direct debit amounts being taken from the account every month there may be a good opportunity to make savings by switching utility companies. Also check your statements from the various companies to see whether your account is in credit – and by the amount. If you have used the same companies for quite a long time and you do have a credit balance, you can ask for it to be repaid back to your account!

Once the finances have been clarified and you are aware of the amount of money which can be saved each month then it will be easy to know the total amount which will be available at the time you do go away. It is quite complicated to book holidays for folk who aren’t related. The options of going on safari whilst staying under canvass, or in lodges, to see the majestic elephants in the distance, or hippos at the watering holes may be a once only opportunity which isn’t accessible to everyone.
What does matter when on holiday is that every person in the group needs to enjoy themselves as much as possible. Occasionally, though group holidays go completely wrong, because it isn’t the holiday that some members of the group wanted or expected.
When planning a holiday for people not related it is essential to establish what everyone actually wants – before booking. A group of friends may be used to meeting in the pub once a week for the quiz and then meeting at the weekends for lunch. Although superficially knowing each other they don’t know much about likes and dislikes and certainly not well enough to discuss the possibility of volunteering in Africa. A few cliques within the group as a whole will probably know the wishes of the few people in their little group. Someone suddenly putting forth the idea “wouldn’t it be great to go on holiday together” may seem a super, if slightly crazy idea, after a win at the pub quiz is followed by a late night curry at the local restaurant!
An easier alternative, particularly if there are twenty or more in the group, could be to plan a weekend in the sun to see how everyone gets on. Even seventy two hours in the company of one or two members may be sufficient to realise that anything more would be a really bad plan.
Those who do get on may decide to give some thought as to a longer break, and for some people who have a sedentary job, a working holiday may be welcomed. A group of friends could find that a few weeks volunteering in Africa works really well for them. They will be assisting a community less fortunate than themselves, and they will get to know the other group members better.
Considering a Career as a Pilot?
Many young children are fascinated by aviation in general and planes in particular, and many express a desire to work as a pilot when they are older. The profession seems glamorous and exciting, with lots of travel to foreign places. Many children grow out of their aim to be a pilot as they get older, but for many it will be a lifelong interest and some will make it in the competitive world of aviation.
Pilots need a good all round academic education, and it is advisable to have good passes in Maths, English and Science subjects. Physical fitness and health is also essential, although a University degree is not always needed. Anything you can do to get experience in flying or in the Forces will help you stand out from the crowd and show a commitment to what you are trying to achieve. Although fighter pilots are the high end glamorous jobs in the military, pilots who fly troops around the world or who pilot search and rescue helicopters are equally important, so it is important to keep your options open and not get too fixated on one small niche.
For commercial pilots, the possibilities are even greater. Learning to fly in a small plane is often the first step for many, and flying lessons can be bought for presents relatively cheaply. For anyone interested in a career in aviation a pilot magazine subscription is a useful gift which will broaden their horizons on the subject as well as giving contact details for flying schools or potential employers. Commercial airlines used to pay for pilots’ training, but this is becoming less common and pilots might have to finance their own training if they wish to qualify to fly passenger aircraft. There are many other options though, such as flying small 6 or 12 seater aircraft rather than large jumbo jets, or flying cargo planes with just a small crew on board. Although travel is a given in this sort of career, it is not always international and even if it is, the jet lag can make the travel far less appealing.

There have been other attempts to extend the waterways to other rivers. These attempts did not endure, but left small waterways where canoes and non-motorised craft can travel without disturbing the local landowners. Over the centuries various attempts to make the waterways more commercially viable were launched and failed. The reason for this is not quite clear, but several merchants and groups of merchants were bankrupted in the process.
The history of the Broads has led to an interesting holiday destination that caters for all tastes. If you don’t like the water, there’s the environmental centre that is open to educate the public on the uniqueness of the wetlands. There are also entertainment centres in the various towns around the Broads that include movies, children’s games and activities, as well as most other entertainment that a holiday destination should have.
